I just got a job as a mechanic at a local indy shop.
I have a decent tool set but know I’m gonna need more stuff for work.
I currently have a 1/2 drive craftsman torque wrench, a few ratcheting wrenches, screw drivers, a pry bar, multi-meter, hammer, 1/2 drive air impact, 1/2 drive air ratchet, 3/8 drive air ratchet, 1/2 impact sockets, 1/2 to 3/8 adapter, 1/2 u-joint, 3/8 u-joint and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .
What else should I get? I’d like to stay cheap on this.

Forgot that in my list. It’s already in my tool bag.

OBD II scanner
3,6,9” wobble extensions
deep well 3/8” sockets
rubber hammer - sometimes a light touch is all you need.

Yeah. I can’t wait to see the crap that’ll come in. But there are awesome cars too. My first task is installing a torque converter in some jag.

What about some magnetic parts holders and drop lights?

multitools are handy

I have a 4” and a 6” parts holder.
Where can I find some cheap lights?
I’m pretty short of money for a few weeks.

I should add vice grips and a pair of pliers.

Harbor freight or Walmart. Anywhere you can get tools from will have lights for under $20.

I have some small vise grips, needle nose vise grips, and some basic lineman and needle nose pliers.

I’ll go get a few then. Anything else you can think of? I’m pretty well set but there’s always those last few things.

Congratulations! You won’t want to stay cheap for long, but Craftsman Pro series stuff isn’t a bad way to begin, until you get on the “$20 a week for life” plan on the Snap-On truck.
You’ll want an LED test light, test leads, a multimeter as Cromolly pointed out, picks, a set of electronics screwdrivers, Torx and Allen keys and sockets, a variety of different hammers (ball peen, dead blow, small sledge), prybars from 6” to 2-3 feet, gasket scrapers, a long magnet, large and small mirrors, 1/4”,3/8”, and 1/2” extensions up to 12”, and more as you gain experience.
Not to scare you, but I’ve got $60k+ in tools (including boxes and electronics) over the last 19 years, and I’ve used them all. Just don’t be the guy that buys a bunch of shit because it’s new and shiny to fill out your box, get what you need.
What is your experience? What is the shop’s specialty? Will the other guys let you borrow tools you don’t have yet?

13 bucks at home depot. Lowes probably has something similar. I doubt it is the greatest light but should get you started.

I think you’ve got the basics pretty well covered.

Excellent suggestions, I forgot those. So many trays. So many lights.

I can never seem to have too many of either.

Thanks!
It will get expensive over time but I want to start cheap. I do prefer cobalt over craftsman though. Sears sucks around here where Lowes is very good.
I have a multimeter, allen keys, the hammers, prybars, a long flexible magnet with light, Some extensions,
I only have DIY stuff so far, but always willing to learn. I’ve done the basics, timing belt, water pump, alternator, axles, sway bars, ball joints, things like that. The shop does general maintenance and repair, nothing too special. We’ll work on pretty much anything. The shop owner told me I can borrow anything I need as long as it’s put back clean, the other guy doesn’t have many tools, he’s mostly just shop help.

I think so too. Thanks.

Amazon has some great stuff for a fair price. Gearwrench is their popular brand, but you can find anything really.
